Water contains common elements, among which are ions of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. The problem with water is that high concentrations of calcium and magnesium contained in the water can cause scale to form on pipes and water heating equipment. Scale increases equipment maintenance and causes premature mechanical failures resulting in significant loss in energy efficiency in water heating equipment. As an alternative to water softeners or chemical treatment, template-assisted crystallization (TAC) excels in scale prevention and meets even the most stringent environmental standards at a reduced cost.
Course Objectives:
- Identify key issues with scale formation and how they relate to equipment reliability, performance degradation, health, and safety
- Evaluate the performance of common scale preventing technologies
- Describe the science and benefits of Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) as a scale preventing technology
- Measure the performance and efficiency of TAC by utilizing the Langelier Saturation Index
- Compare the cost effectiveness of traditional scale preventing technologies and TAC
