Rainwater harvesting in the modern commercial context involves a number of disciplines in the building trades and therefore must be understood from a systems perspective. This course outlines the framework for system design from the moment the rain hits the collection surface to the time it is flows to the end use in or out of the building.

This course works through the various stages that the water must be filtered prior to permanent storage as well as the additional filtering and treatment that follows storage.

The recurrent theme is make the water “fit for purpose”. In addition to basic system design, it identifies and analyzes common pitfalls and failure points and how to avoid them thru the proper selection of the critical components common to successfully executed rainwater harvesting systems.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the basics of rainwater harvesting as a renewable resource and its possible uses in and out of the building.
  • Analyze the major pre-filter types and applications
  • Differentiate between disinfection strategies and their applications
  • Employ the appropriate pre-filter type in a rainwater system
  • Distinguish between the most commonly applied disinfection strategies
